Unfortunately, even as a Domestic Violence Awareness Advocate, I have been guilty of this – not as much recently; but early on, oh yeah
While the motivation may be purely to help; a BIG part of the transition from Victim to Survivor, is learning how to ask for help.
Think about it – they’re living in an environment where nearly every moment of their life they’re told what to think, feel and do. If YOU do that with/for them; how will they learn to think, feel and do, for themselves?
Here are some practical ideas, especially if you are personally involved in a Victim’s life. Keep some things handy:
– up-to-date local shelter information
– a basic, adaptable Emergency Plan
– maybe keep a “burner phone” handy
– do some research for more ideas
– ask the Victim what “support looks like” for them
– remind them to practice a little self-care – even if it’s only two minutes alone in the bathroom to catch their breath, can help.
Irregardless, you want to wait for them to ask for help. Now if an opportunity arises to mention something – give them a “small bite” of information. Again, in Domestic Violence, “overwhelm” is another perpetrator tactic – it keeps them off-balance, thereby, easier to manipulate.
Have you ever been given, or given someone else “Unsolicited Advice”? Think about how it made you feel, and follow your own instincts on how to proceed. They’re there – but like everything else, YOU have to learn to listen.
Thank you, have a good day, and be safe…

*October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Please share this post, no matter what month it is, to help get the word out. The Victim has to make the choice – but, “What If…” they read something you sent them, and it just “clicks”?
*I share a “What If…” post, on the first post of every month, and I would love the opportunity to share YOUR “what ifs”. Please send your “What If…” ideas to Connie J… – beamererin@yahoo.com; or through Ozer, at the website ozerministriesinc.com, or email, ozerministries@att.net.
