This demonstrates why, when someone betrays that love & trust, the pain is so great.

Perpetrators USE that love to abuse; in Domestic Violence situations, that is their "lock". They count on their continuation of abuse, because they KNOW that person "loves them so much". Or "doesn't want to cause any more trouble".
